François Bayrou, le président de l’UDF, ne mâche pas ses mots à l’égard des groupes industriels qui sont à la fois propriétaires de médias et fournisseurs de l’Etat. Sans les nommer, il vise les groupes Bouygues, Dassault (*) et Lagardère qui ont des participations dans la plupart des télévisions, journaux ou radios français. D'après lui, ces industriels « ont le plus grand intérêt à maîtriser, tenir les choix futurs des Français de manière qu'au bout du compte, leur avenir soit préservé ». Dans la mesure, explique le président de l'UDF, où ces grands groupes ont « des rapports de clients avec l'Etat, dont la vie et le développement dépendent de la commande publique », ils orienteraient le choix des Français vers des candidats qui leur seraient favorables sur le long terme. Et de conclure qu’ « il y a des puissances très importantes qui en particulier ont des intérêts dans les médias et qui poussent à ce choix tout fait : Nicolas Sarkozy d'un côté, Ségolène Royal de l'autre.
